Welcome to Nexcess.
Where if you're under the age of 25, your life pretty much sucks. If you are between the ages of 10 to 25, you are marked as 'Unaccepted'. Or more commonly, 'Runners'. Tired of living under the Alphantos Protocol, twin brothers, Joel and Aiden, embark on a journey to escape from it.
The only leads they have are the legends on a place where Runners are free to live as the please. 'Free City', the Runner's paradise.
Nexcess and the Protocol:
On Nexcess exists the Alphantos Protocol. A law that attempts to create a superior and pure humanity by weeding out the weak. This is done by taking the children from their parents at a tender age and training them within institutions called 'Scholar Clinics'. These children are thus called 'Scholars'. After teaching the young what they need to know, they are sent out into the world to fend for themselves, at the age of 10. They are then deemed 'Unaccepted', commonly referred to as 'Runners', and are shunned by the higher ranks of society. If they manage to survive for 15 years, they are welcomed into the civilized community and become 'Accepted', or collectively recognized as 'Legion'.
Scholars and Unaccepted have no last names. Only upon Acceptance, does a person receive a last name. After being tested on their worth and superiority, a person receives a last name starting with a letter that represents their standing in society. 'Z' being the highest and 'A' being the lowest. From that point onward, depending on their name, an Accepted can go to a tertiary institution to study or simply start working in their assigned profession.
First names for Scholars can range from anything to everything. Since the children are taken away at a young age, some parents don't even bother giving them a name, seeing as the child won't be around for long. In that case, it's up to the Educators in the Clinics to pick a name.
Alpha and Guard:
The Guard are the main and most common law Enforcers on Nexcess (similar to the police force in our world).
They are tasked with executing the law, imposing the Protocol and protecting citizens. As with all citizens upon Acceptance, they receive a last name with a letter that establishes their worth and usability. Accpated enlisted in the Guard have last names that start with 'M', 'N' or 'O', regardless of the rank they receive or later rise to. The Guard are situated in all cities across the continent, apart from the capitol.
The Guard are easily spotted by their dark and light purple attire, and badges on their shoulders or chest.
The Alphantos Elite are the law enforcers of the great capitol, Alphantos, where their base is situated. Casually referred to as 'Alpha', they do not simply enforce the law in the city, but strictly apply the Protocol and laws on the outside as well. They have jurisdiction over the Guard and uses them as their 'foot-soldiers' outside Alphantos' walls. They monitor information recieved from Guard across the continent and serve justice to those that break the Protocol's laws.
The Alpha obey and serve the leader of Nexcess and Alphantos, the One Blood.
Last names for the Alpha range between the letters 'U' and 'Y' and dictate rank. Certain ranks are required to wear a colour on them as well, usually in the form of a small cape hanging behind them.
'U', officers, no cape.
'V', Privates, blue cape.
'W' Captains, red cape.
'X', Lieutenants, silver cape.
'Y', Generals and Commander, gold capes and black cape.
Everyone starts as an officer but are expected to rise to the rank they were allocated to. Very rarely does anyone rise higher than what their last name dictates.
